Sweet Success: Diabetes and Pregnancy Program
The purpose of this program is to promote the appropriate perinatal care of women with diabetes and their offspring during their pregnancies. This includes: training of providers of care in caring for women with diabetes mellitis before, during and after a pregnancy complicated by diabetes; establishing and maintaining resources for care; promoting awareness; updating professionals; updating patient education materials; developing, implementing and evaluating the components of the program to maximize effectiveness based on the above objectives; and improve cultural competency and address cultural concerns related to diabetes and pregnancy.
Introduction
Program: California Diabetes and Pregnancy Program, Region 4 also known as the Mid-Coastal Diabetes and Pregnancy Program or Sweet Success Program. We cover the area from San Mateo County to San Luis Obispo.
Regions: There are a total of 10 Regions in the state. Each Region is composed of a team.
Funding: State of California, Maternal Child Health Branch. All staff members are part-time employees.
Goal: Improve pregnancy outcomes of women with diabetes during pregnancy.

The rate of birth defects among infants of women with diabetes will approximate the normal population when participating in the program prior to conception.

The intrauterine growth pattern will approximate the infants of women without diabetes

The degree of morbidity and mortality among infants of women with diabetes will approximate the normal population

The cost effectiveness of the program will be demonstrated through the reduction in the adverse outcomes for this high risk group.

Affiliates: Affiliate Programs (called Sweet Success Programs) provide direct care to women with diabetes during their pregnancies. The staff of these programs have had special training, by the Regional team, and follow the California Guidelines for Care.
