High Risk Infant Follow-up
We take care of those vulnerable children who required a stay in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The infant’s first three years are very important to their development and their behavior. We know that children who had medical problems at birth are at higher risk for later difficulties than children born at term without any complications. We also know that families have many questions and concerns after a child requires an NICU stay. Therefore, we see children on a regular basis, integrating a traditional medical evaluation with a detailed developmental assessment.
The follow-up program is designed to assist families in identifying the child’s strengths and needs. We help families to obtain medical and community-based services if the child shows emerging developmental or behavioral problems. We communicate with the child’s primary care physician and any treating subspecialists so that care can remain coordinated. We offer advice and counsel.
Developmental Consultations
Some children do not make developmental progress at the usual rate. Some families have questions or concerns about a child’s development or behavior. Some physicians have found that children do not pass screening tests in their primary care office. We offer these children and families the opportunity for a developmental consultation.
Developmental consultations are designed to assist families, physicians, and community service providers in identifying a child’s strengths and needs. We integrate medical evaluations with developmental assessments. We prepare detailed reports which we use to communicate with the family and health care team. We make recommendations for community-based services and assist families in contacting those services. We offer counseling and guidance to families and care providers.
In-patient Developmental Consultations
The NICU environment can be overwhelming to vulnerable neonates and their families. Together with parents, the Infant Development Team creates a plan of care that nurtures the baby’s developing nervous system in this intensive care environment. Before a child is discharged, the Infant Development Team assesses baby’s progress with input from parents, nurses, physicians, and therapists. With parents, the team plans and prepares for nurturing the baby’s continued development at home.
Autism and Social Communication
Children who are delayed in learning to speak may struggle to make relationships and to learn. This program evaluates children with autism or other problems that affect communication and social skills. As in the other programs, we seek to understand a child’s unique profile of strengths and needs. We integrate medical evaluations with developmental and behavioral assessment. We prepare detailed reports which we use to communicate with the family and health care team. We make recommendations for community-based services and assist families in contacting those services. We offer counseling and guidance to families and care providers.
Cerebral Palsy
Children with difficulty moving their muscles and walking may qualify for the diagnosis of cerebral palsy. This program evaluates children. The main purpose is to find treatment options that will assist the child in making progress with motor skills.
Preemie Graduate Services
Many children born prematurely development normally. Some children born prematurely have difficulty long after their NICU stay with development, behavior, academic achievement, or social-emotional functioning. The Preemie Graduate Services Program provides access to specialized medical support for children who were born prematurely. The services are designed to assist preschool and school age children and their families. A shared effort between specialists, therapists, educators, the child’s pediatrician, and family members can help children with developmental difficulties to grow and thrive in their community. The Preemie Graduate Services Program strives to address any behavioral, developmental, or educational concerns at the earliest sign of difficulty to assist children and their parents in identifying and understanding their strengths and difficulties while helping them to maintain a positive sense of self.
