High Risk Infant Follow-up

We know that children who have had medical problems at birth are at higher risk for difficulties at older ages than children born without complications.  The High Risk infant Follow-up Program is designed to help families monitor their child’s development

through the first three years of life. Children are evaluated at regular intervals. Parents receive an individualized assessment and action plan for enhancing their child’s progress.  Our team of developmental experts communicates closely with the family’s primary care provider. When necessary, we provide referrals to community agencies and early intervention programs. We offer services one time per month at our satellite location in Santa Cruz.

Preemie Graduate Services

Our specialized services for children who had birth-related complications, such as prematurity, extend through age 18 years.  The Preemie Graduate Services Program strives to address any behavioral, developmental, or educational concerns at the earliest sign of difficulty. We assist children and their parents in understanding the child’s strengths and needs so that the child maintains a positive sense of self.  Detailed evaluations may take place over several sessions.

Developmental Consultationcasey with kid

This service offers assistance to a family or health care provider with questions about a child’s development or behavior.  The Developmental Consultation Program evaluates the child’s skills in a wide range of developmental areas.   As part of the evaluation, families are asked to complete a developmental questionnaire. The information from the questionnaire is integrated with

medical evaluations and developmental and behavioral assessments to prepare detailed reports for the family and health care team. These reports provide recommendations and referrals for community-based services. We may also follow-up to monitor the child’s progress and update recommendations.

Autism and Social Communication

Children who are delayed in communication may struggle to make relationships and to learn. The Autism and Social Communication Program evaluates children with autism and other communication difficulties. Our evaluations combine medical, developmental and behavioral information.   We recommend a comprehensive plan of community-based services and family support.  We also provide a detailed written report of the visit, including recommendations based on the latest scientific knowledge.

Inpatient Developmental Program

The hospital environment can be overwhelming to babies and their families. Babies born prematurely or with medical complications may have difficulties in experiencing the world and relating to their family. The Inpatient Developmental Program works with parents and staff to create a plan of care that nurtures the baby’s developing nervous system.  We identify an approach that helps the baby to be calm and engaged.  We also work with families to plan and prepare for nurturing the baby’s continued development at home.
