PATIENT CARE

Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Stanford

Our Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Level II Intermediate Care Nursery, and Well Baby Nursery are all housed within our Johnson Center for Pregnancy and Newborn Services at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford. We are the only hospital in the Bay Area – and one of few in the country – to offer obstetric, neonatal, and pediatric services all in one place.

World Class Care in the Bay Area

  • U.S. News & World Report ranks Neonatology at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford within the Top 10 neonatology specialties nationwide.
  • Our 40-bed Level IV NICU provides specialized, family-centered care for critically ill newborns with complex care needs.
  • Our 30-bed Level II Intermediate Care Nursery provides a full range of services focused on nutrition, growth and development.
  • We're excited to be expanding and renovating our NICU. The first of four units, the Axe and Blaise Wanstrath Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, opened in February 2025 and features 16 rooms, including 14 private rooms and 2 semiprivate rooms specifically designed for multiples.
  • Our faculty provide medical direction in nurseries at hospitals throughout the Bay Area, ensuring the same high quality care for families throughout the mid-coastal California region.

Clinical Research

There are many ongoing, active clinical research trials at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford. Our Division is one of 15 centers around the country that participates in the Neonatal Research Network, which conducts collaborative, multi-center clinical trials designed to improve healthcare and outcomes for newborns.

Parents may be approached by our neonatology clinical research coordinators who will provide information on studies in our NICU actively enrolling patients. Participation in clinical trials is entirely optional and does not impact the quality of care a baby receives.

For questions regarding NICU clinical research trials, contact Clinical Research Manager Karen Morris.
