Short Term Visiting Opportunities

Eligibility:
A visitor to SHC and/or LPCH who will be watching patient care and administrative functions for medical or professional education, or training:

Observers must be at least eighteen (18) years old or in an approved structured SHC/LPCH or program.

The following categories are generally allowed under the Visiting Observer policy:

• High School Students that are age 18 or over
• Students from Stanford or another domestic University
• Medical Students currently enrolled in a non-Stanford medical school that are interested in observing care (this excludes medical students here for training related to a clerkship or externship)
• International Physicians interested in observing procedures
• International Professionals interested in observing procedures for educational purposes
• Domestic physicians or healthcare professionals interested in observing care
• Healthcare Professionals interested in observing for educational purposes

Requirements:

• Your visits may not exceed more than one (1) month.
• An observer may not participate in any patient care activities.
• Must be supervised by SHC/LPCH staff members at all times and not left unattended in any clinical areas.
• No course credit will be given for an observership, and may not be included on your CV/resume.

Instructions:
Before you start the application process:

1. Identify and contact your host (supervisor)
2. Identify dates of prospective visit
3. Have an electronic copy of your immunization records to upload showing proof of:
       
   1. Varicella (Chickenpox) - Pos Titer or Evidence of 2 Varicella vaccines
   2. Measles - Pos. Titer or Evidence of 2 MMR vaccines
   3. Mumps - Pos. Titer or Evidence of 2 MMR vaccines
   4. Rubella - Pos. Titer or Evidence of 2 MMR vaccines
   5. Hepatitis B - Pos. Titer or Evidence of 3 Hep B vaccines
   6. Tdap Vaccine (Tetanus/Diptheria/Pertussis)
   7. Flu Vaccine/Immunization
   8. Proof of TB (Tuberculosis) screening within the last 90 days (Please Note: You will be unable to shadow if you have not completed this screening)
4. Complete initial request form

Please note, completion of the initial request form does not guarantee approval of your visit. Please allow 4-6 weeks for notification that your visit has been approved or denied by the Office of Pediatric Education and the School of Medicine Human Resource Group.

Requests MUST be received a minimum of six (6) weeks prior to start date. Please contact Education Program Manager Asia Wesley for more information.

Eligibility:

The primary purpose of the experience is to offer training for the student in research methods. Student must be:

• At least 16 years of age
• Enrolled in high school, pre-baccalaureate program, community college, undergraduate program, post-baccalaureate program, or medical school
• US citizen or permanent resident

Requirements:

• Your visits may not exceed more than six (6) months
• If receiving course credit, provide proof using template. If not receiving course credit, provide letter of recommendation from your school
• A copy of your medical insurance card
• If you are under the age of 18, additional paperwork will be required (see instructions)
   

Instructions:

1. Identify and contact your host (supervisor)
2. Identify specific dates of prospective visit
3. If seeking course credit, you must have:
      a. Proof of registration in the course (see templates in the Forms section)
      b. Official course description
4. If you are not seeking course credit, please provide a letter of support from your home institution (i.e., from a counselor, teacher, or faculty member) justifying the value of the experience.
5. Please complete required documents below before you submit the initial request form. Documents will only be accepted in PDF format.
6. Please have a copy of your valid medical insurance card
7. Complete the initial request form

If any information is missing or incomplete, your application will not be considered. Please allow 4-6 weeks for notification that your visit has been approved or denied by the Office of Pediatric Education and the School of Medicine Human Resource Group.
